Community Outreach
Bridgestone Americas Chairman Duke Nishiyama and Habitat For Humanity homeowner Judy Sims
Giving back to the communities we call home is deeply ingrained in the culture of Bridgestone Americas. It is at the heart of who we are. Our teammates care about their friends and neighbors and are eager for opportunities to make a difference in their communities.
In the United States, teammates organize philanthropic efforts to meet specific needs in their hometowns. Here are just a few examples:
- Teammates at the Woodridge Distribution Center put together a team and raised $1,115 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Stride & Ride 5K walk at Brookfield Zoo
- Teammates at the Jacksonville Distribution Center shipped five large boxes of clothing and goods to the 1st – 25th Infantry Division stationed at Camp Warehouse in Iraq. The teammates were very generous with pre-packaged food, games, international calling cards and toiletries.
- Teammates at the Wilson, N.C. plant organized a professional fair for 950 eighth graders. Students spent a full school day talking to and interacting with real workers from more than 50 businesses in Wilson. Roundtables were comprised of groups of workers (from different companies and from different professional disciplines) who answered students’ questions and explained what they did.
- For years, Bridgestone’s Des Moines location has served as the primary sponsor for the Special Olympics of Iowa Bowling Tournaments. Teammates have volunteered for Special Olympic events such as the Bowling Tournament, the roller skating tournament, Unified Sports Day, Play Activity Day, fundraising during Iowa State University Football games, and Challenge Day.
- Teammates in Nashville have organized fundraisers for Junior Achievement, participated in Habitat for Humanity builds and Holiday Angel Tree Programs, and supported United Way campaigns.
At Bridgestone Canada, teammates work with Mercy House to provide housing and support services to homeless men and women, mothers with their children, and families. Teammates specifically provide services and support to people staying at Mercy House, concentrating on the children of homeless families.
In Latin America, teammates often reach out to help those who are less fortunate. Some highlights:
- Bridgestone Chile teammates worked with, “Un techo para Chile”, a Chilean foundation that helps families without houses that live in poor rural conditions, to build two classrooms and one library for a countryside location called Chorrillos. Bridgestone Chile also supported f the “Cena Pan y Vino” (Bread & Wine Dinner), which helped to build a day care for low-income families.
- Bridgestone Argentina supported the inhabitants of Tartagal, north of Argentina, who were affected by landslides. Volunteers gathered and distributed 1.5 tons of non-perishable items, clothing, shoes and medicine.
- Bridgestone Brazil created Bridgestone Swim Speed, which is sponsored Olympic swimmer Fernando Sherer. This project helps to promote the children and teenagers’ social inclusion through sports. The program has supported 6,500 children. Bridgestone Brasil also made a donation of 179 toys to the institution Projeto Amigo (Friend Project), which offers educational, medical and dental services in partnership with Metodista University of São Paulo.
- Bridgestone Mexico supports a number of programs supporting those in dire need. Teammates are invited to continuously support children in different programs developed by the Community Committee, such as kids day, back to school programs, Christmas for everyone, etc.
